The Fargo Park District Board of Commissioners held its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 in the Alex Stern Community Room at the Fargo Parks Sports Center. The board approved the agenda and consent agenda as presented.
Public Comments
During public comments, a community member spoke regarding transportation accessibility to the Fargo Parks Sports Center and encouraged continued discussion around public transit access and transportation partnerships to help improve accessibility to public meetings and recreation opportunities.
Director’s Report
Deputy Director of Operations Dave Bietz shared seasonal operational updates, including the opening of all Fargo Park District golf courses and driving ranges for the season. Additional updates included the annual Yunker Farm community garden plot sale, which sold out on the first day, as well as upcoming community events including Arbor Day at the Anderson/Tharaldson Complex, Fairy Fest at Yunker Farm, and Midwest Kidfest at Island Park.
The board also received updates related to upcoming summer operations, including planned opening dates for Island Park Pool and the District’s remaining outdoor pools.
Special Assessment Committee Presentation
The board received a presentation related to the Fargo Park District’s newly established Special Assessment Committee. Staff outlined the history of special assessment districts within the Park District and reviewed the committee’s work to develop a formal benefits determination metric for future park development projects and amenities. The board approved the proposed benefit determination metric, which will be used to help evaluate future special assessment districts and developer agreements moving forward.
Metro Senior Ride Service Fare Increase Proposal
The board received a presentation regarding a proposed fare increase for Metro Senior Ride Service, which would increase fares from $3 to $4 per stop for the first time in approximately 14 years. Discussion focused on rising operational costs, vehicle replacement needs, long-term sustainability of the service, and the importance of maintaining affordable transportation options for seniors.
Board discussion also included concerns related to affordability for riders who rely on the service for recurring medical appointments and the importance of proactively gathering feedback from riders prior to implementing any fare increase. Following discussion, the board directed staff to gather additional public input and rider feedback before bringing the proposal back for future consideration.
Planning Committee Updates
The board received a Planning Committee update that included discussion related to the Anderson Complex baseline fence replacement project, Brunsdale Park dugout replacement project, overflow parking easement agreements near Scheels Arena, the Special Assessment Committee process, and the Metro Senior Ride fare increase proposal.
