The Fargo Park District is advising boaters to use caution when launching and retrieving watercraft at the Iwen Park Boat Launch (Convent Landing) on the Red River. Due to the extremely low river water levels, a hole has developed just beyond the end of the concrete boat ramp. Under normal water conditions, most trailers do not need to back far enough to reach the end of the ramp. However, with current low water levels, trailers backed beyond the end of the concrete ramp may drop into the hole, making them difficult to remove.
The Fargo Park District's Park Operations Department is actively working to address the issue. Because the Red River is a protected waterway, repairs require a government permit before rock or fill material can be placed in the river. While the repair itself is relatively straightforward, obtaining the necessary permit means the process will take some time.
The boat launch remains open at this time. The Fargo Park District will be installing signage to clearly identify the end of the concrete ramp and remind boaters to avoid backing trailers beyond that point. Until repairs are completed, boaters are encouraged to:
- Use extra caution when launching and retrieving boats.
- Watch for posted signs marking the end of the concrete ramp.
- Avoid backing trailer wheels beyond the end of the ramp.
- Avoid power loading boats onto trailers, as propeller wash can erode the riverbed and contribute to holes forming at the end of boat ramps.
