Get ready to turn ordinary cardboard into extraordinary fun! Bring your creativity and engineering skills to the hill as you build a sled from recycled cardboard and race it against others in a thrilling downhill challenge. Show off your imagination in the Best Design contest and compete for speed in your age class. Registration begins at 10:30 am in the warming house, with races starting promptly at 11:00 am.
Age Classes:
- Class 1: Ages 10 and under
- Class 2: Ages 11 to 17
- Class 3: Ages 18 and older
This is a free, family-friendly event and pre-registration is not required.
Event Details
Speed races will be held by age classes. Awards will be presented to the first three participants who cross the finish line in each class.
Each class race is a shotgun start, with all racers beginning at the same time. Racers must be in or on their sled when crossing the finish line.
- Participants may also choose to enter their sled in the Best Design contest.
- Best Design is categorized by age classes.
- Best Design is judged by an assembled panel prior to each class of speed races.
- Entries must be on-site and registered by 10:45 am.
- Judges’ decisions are final.
- Registration is held on-site the day of the event beginning at 10:30 am.
- Teams should report for registration between 10:30 and 10:50 am.
- The Class 1 race begins at 11:00 am, with Class 2 and Class 3 races following immediately after the previous class is completed.
- All racers are encouraged to be present for all races to ensure they do not miss their race.
- Awards are presented at the completion of all races.
- Teams must construct their sled prior to the event and bring it with them.
- No materials will be available on-site.
- Sleds must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects, or any other features deemed dangerous by event staff.
- Participants must be able to stop their sled. You may be asked to explain or demonstrate how your sled stops during inspection.
Approved Materials
Only the following materials may be used to construct sleds:
- Corrugated cardboard
- Tape
- Glue
Prohibited Materials
The following materials are not allowed:
- Corrugated plastics or other corrugated materials
- Non-corrugated cardboard such as carpet tubes
- Cardboard bonded to other materials
- Epoxy-reinforced cardboard or any cardboard that raises safety concerns
- Tar-based substances
- Epoxy glue
- Fiberglass resin
- Two-part varnishes or any other two-part substances
- Glues that harden into solids that may be deemed dangerous or may leave hazardous debris on the hill
- Screws, mechanical fasteners, nails, staples, or any other fastening materials that may be deemed dangerous or may leave hazardous debris on the hill
If there is any doubt about a material, do not use it.
Taping Rules
- Tape may be used only on seams and joints.
- The entire sled may not be taped.
- Sleds may not be wrapped in plastic, tape, shrink wrap, or any other materials.
