Youth Ice Skating

These classes offer basic professional skating instructions for boys and girls ages 2 to adult. Classes teach beginners the correct way to skate. Students are awarded test results at the end of the six week sessions.

Anyone may register now for any ONE session of lessons.

To sign up for an additional session, you must wait until the session you are currently in has ended, allowing you to register for the next appropriate level. This also allows everyone the opportunity to register and participate in at least one session.

ADULT & TOTS: These classes are for tots ages 2-5 that are beginning to skate. Skaters will skate in their class with an adult (adult must wear skates). This class has 3 levels.

  • In order to complete Pre Level 1 the skater must be able to:
    • Sit and stand up with skates on and off ice
    • Sit and stand on ice
    • March in place
    • Dip in place
  • In order to complete Pre Level 2 the skater must be able to:
    • Two foot glide
    • Two foot glide and dip
    • Rocking horse
    • Swizzles
    • Two foot hop
    • Backwards skating
  • In order to complete Pre Level 3 your child must be able to:
    • Forward skating
    • Forward one foot glide
    • Forward two foot glide
    • Backward two foot swizzles
    • Forward snowplow stop
    • Forward slalom

    • Stand still snowplow stop
    • Glide on two feet
    • Dip
    • Rocking Horse
    • Foot glide and two foot hop
    • Backward skating

INTERMEDIATE: These classes are for skaters who have completed Beginners Level 2. Skaters will work on Level 3 and Level 4.

  • In order to complete Intermediate Level 3 the skater must be able to:
    • Forward stroke
    • Forward one foot swizzles on the circle
    • Backward one foot swizzles on the circle
    • Two foot turn forward to backward with a small glide
    • Glide on one foot
    • Two foot spin
  • In order to complete Intermediate Level 4 the skater must be able to:
    • Forward outside edge
    • Forward inside edge
    • Forward crossovers
    • Forward outside 3-turn

ADVANCED: These classes are for the skaters who have completed Level 4. Skaters will work on Level 5 and Level 6.

  • In order to complete Advanced Level 5 the skater must be able to:
    • Backward outside edge
    • Backward inside edge
    • Two foot spin to a one foot spin
    • T-stop
    • Side toe hop
  • In order to complete Advanced Level 6 the skater must be able to:
    • Forward inside 3-turn
    • Backward two foot glide and turn to forward
    • Hockey stop
    • Bunny hop
    • Spiral in a straight line
    • Lunge

NOVICE PATCH: Novice Patch is the next progressive step for skaters who have completed Level 6. Skaters will work on Novice Patch Level 7 and 8.Students are taught the fundamentals of free skate, dance and moves in the field.

  • In order to complete Novice Patch Level 7 the skater must be able to:
    • Open mohawk
    • Backward outside to a forward outside transition on the circle
    • Landing position
    • Beginning scratch spin
    • Ballet jump
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Level 8 the skater must be able to:
    • On the circle, forward outside 3-turn
    • On the circle, forward inside 3-turn
    • Stand still waltz jump
    • Mazurka
    • Combination move
    • Forward inside pivot
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Dance Level 1 the skater must be able to:
    • Forward consecutive swing rolls: 4 count
    • Forward consecutive swing rolls: 6 count
    • Forward consecutive progressives: 4 count
    • Forward consecutive progressives: 6 count
    • Forward consecutive chasses: 4 count
    • Forward consecutive chasses: 6 count
    • Killian hold
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Dance Level 2 the skater must be able to:
    • Forward consecutive slide chasses: 4 count
    • Cross strokes
    • Forward consecutive inside swing rolls: 4 count
    • Right cross behind, left cross behind & right cross behind
    • Backward consecutive swing rolls: 4 count
    • Backward consecutive swing rolls: 6 count
    • Backward consecutive progressives: 4 count
    • Backward consecutive progressives: 6 count
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Freestyle Level 1 the skater must be able to:
    • Advanced forward stroking
    • Forward consecutive outside edges
    • Forward consecutive inside edges
    • Scratch spin from back crossovers
    • Waltz jump from back crossovers
    • Half flip
    • On circle, back outside 3-turn
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Freestyle Level 2 the skater must be able to:
    • Backward consecutive outside edges
    • Backward consecutive inside edges
    • Waltz jump, side toe hop & waltz jump
    • Toe loop
    • Waltz threes
    • Back spin
    • Forward and backward cross overs in a figure eight pattern
    • Salchow
  • In order to complete Novice Patch Freestyle Level 3 the skater must be able to:
    • Half lutz
    • Waltz jump toe loop
    • Salchow toe loop
    • On a circle, back inside 3-turn
    • Back spin, 3 revolution
    • Waltz eight
    • Sit spin
    • Spiral sequence

All Fargo Park District programs and leagues are first come first serve. Please be advised, a lot of programs and leagues fill up before the registration deadline. You cannot register for a program or league that is already full. Some programs and leagues have waitlists. If you are on a waitlist, you are NOT registered and are only contacted if a spot becomes available.
